iPhone wont charge after new battery replacement

I replaced the battery after the phone was dropped as it said the battery was dead.

Replaced with a new battery and the phone turned on and everything works fine except the new battery wouldn't charge.

The Iphone was recognized by my computer and it would say on the iphone screen it was charging but obviously it would not.

The Iphone will hold the charge if its plugged in, but then will continue to drain once its off the charge.

Did I get a dud battery or is there some other hardware issue?

danny, yes it is possible that you got a dud. First thing I would check on is the dock connector. Make sure that the pins are not bend, corroded or have debris in the connector. Try a different cable as well. If that does not work, replace the battery once more. Make sure that you have an APN number that will work for your phone. Some of the lower battery numbers can give you trouble as well. Should it still give you problems, you need to check the charging fuses as well as the PMIC. Hope this helps, good luck.
