How do I diagnose which component is bad.

I was given this iphone 4 after the owner had recently taken it in to have the screen replaced. She said it worked for a day and then nothing. The repair man did not stand behind his work. when I plug it in to charge it a white apple lights up then disappears and continues to do so. I've taken it apart and checked all connections and check the battery at the connecter and its putting out 2.8 volts. I tried DFU mode but had no luck and since I'm not the original owner and it's been worked on already I can't fall back on the warranty. I don't know what to check next.

Problem solved. I cleaned both the battery connections and the dock connecter with electronic cleaner and plugged it into a A/C charger and all works now. Thanks oldturkey03 for your answer and also vanish172.

russell eyre, "check the battery at the connecter and its putting out 2.8 volts." is not enough power. Check to see if it charges on an AC charger. Clean your dock connector of any debris and make sure that you use a known good cable. The "not charging" can be caused by multiple things, like the cable, dock connector bad battery, bad charging coil as well as other components. Check for corrosion, loose connection etc. on the logic board. Hope this helps, good luck.

Well you can rule out the non "essential" components, the camera, the vibrator, the antenna, the volume buttons etc. pretty much anything the phone turn on without. The LCD display is working since the apple icon comes on. The battery works since you tested it. It attempts to turn on so its most likely not the docking port. The only place I could think a problem with the logic board. It might be the part at which the battery connects to the logic board, since it is unable to turn on.
