How can I hack & expand memory in my iOS device?

Hello iFixers!

First of all thank you so much for this wonderful webpage. It really is very helpful and it gives us a lot of information.

Now, I was wondering a risky task of hacking an Apple iOS device (iPod Touch or iPhone, it's the same really). Probably the iPod Touch is simpler and easier to hack so I'd rather if we centered in this product.

So this is the question: Can I open my iPod and weld in a SSD memory expansion, previously extracted from a mini-SD card?

Then, supposing this is possible and that everything went as good as it can. Will the device recognize the new memory and use it as it's own, or will I have to hack the device?

My objective is to be able to trasnfer my complete iTunes library to an iPod Touch with iOS. Yes, I could buy an iPod Classic, but it doesn't have WiFi, Bluetooth, Airplay or a 5 inch retina display.

And before you mention it: No, iTunes Match is not good enough ;)

So I'll be waiting for your answers. Thank you so much for your help!

As of 2016 it can be done, with the iPhone 6 model and under.

Hi JM !

As you may know, memory in an iDevice is flash memory. This is just a black block (you'll see it somewhere on this teardown for example iPod Touch 4th Generation Teardown ). Trying to replace the native one with a more large one would be a little like trying to replace a memory module on a RAM bar. As you are not a factory bot, it is absolutely impossible. Even if you succeded it, you'd not be sure that your iDevice would recognize it and would boot up again.

But you may learn about iTunes match. iTunes Match ($25 a year, cheaper than any memory replacement) enables you to listen to EVERY (paid or not) music in your computer iTunes library, and from anywhere. The only condition is the song to be on the iTunes Store. You'll get it with the iTunes Store quality and requires no free space on your device, as songs are downloaded then deleted.

Hoping to have helped you !

Vincent
