Backlight Issue - Not Inverter, Cable, or Logic Board

Hi,

I have been trying to fix an issue with the backlight on my friends A1181 laptop. When the problem began, the backlight would occasionally cut out. This got worse over time and seemed to be related to screen movement. Turning brightness down then back up would remedy the problem for a short time.

After doing some research, I decided to replace the inverter cable. This did not help, so I went ahead and replaced the inverter itself. Today I installed the new inverter but still the same issue! I can get it to stay on for sometimes about 30 seconds (if that) by moving the screen around a bit.

I have checked the voltage supplied to the inverter and get 3.2, 5.0, 0.0 and 12.3 on the four conductors (as expected, i believe?).

So, what does this leave? Could it be that the backlight tube itself need to be replaced? Any other ideas for a fix?

Thanks for your help!

Try hooking up to an external monitor to eliminate the GPU.

Hi,

Thanks for your answer.

There is always an image on the screen so probably not the GPU. Also have just plugged into an external monitor to confirm. The external monitor is displaying constantly while the built in screen has the same troubles as earlier. Any other ideas?

What was your parts source, this still sounds like an inverter cable problem. If the picture is completely going out, then go for the display cable.

Parts are from eBay. At first I actually replaced the cable using the original plugs and had the same response. I then ordered a new cable and same results. Thus I think it is very unlikely to be the cable causing the problem.

Had the exact same issue ( hey apple, can you say recall?) It was the led bulb.

Pretty much same with my macbook... Could get it on for about 3 seconds then backlight goes off, now and again it would stay on permanently until i shut the screen or power off then no luck again... Today while trying to get it to stay on the backlight has just completely gone and doesnt even flicker anymore... Would love some advice on where to start with replacing or repairing please?

jonc2k8, you may have more success if you ask your own question. you also want to make sure that you properly identify your computer so that anybody will know exactly what to look for. This could be caused by bad cable, inverter or LED driver or other items on your backlight circuitry.
