What is the point of taking out the optical Drive?

I have a macbook pro 13" mid 2012 and I'm planning on putting in this ssd (Crucial m4 256GB 2.5-Inch (9.5mm) SATA 6Gb/s Solid State Drive). And i heard it was a good idea to replace the optical drive with the old HDD but I have no idea why and what the advantages and consequences would be. Please help.

This just provides you with the additional storage of the original drive.
