Why is my iMac screen scrambling?

I have maxed out the ram on this imac, but the screen gets vertical lines through it, and freezes. The last time I got on it the screen was scrambled and I had to restart it to get it to work right.

Thanks a bunch that makes more sense. What are the chances I can change out the video card myself and fix it. Or should I be looking to get a new one?

Thanks.

You've given a very generic description of you machine. Only some models can have the video card replaced/upgraded (most have them soldered to the logic board). . .it is an advanced DIY you have to almost completely disassemble, then reassemble the unit either way (replace logic board with video card, or, replace the video card).

RAM has nothing to do with Video... that's your Video Card, or, your internal display chain. Connect to an external monitor... if the problem persists it is the VGU (VGC) if you don't see the same artifacts the problem is a cable or in the LCD. Checking over the cable and its connection may identify or eliminate it as a source of trouble.
