audacity has a 10 hr record but the spin wheel is blocking

Audacity recorded 10 hrs of play time and now is stuck and I don't know how to get the computer to become un-stock. The Mac spin wheel is on and I don't know how to release the recording without loosing what was recorded -- can you pls advise how I get the computer to respond and begin replay of my recording.

The spinning wheel likely is your system trying to find needed resources RAM or disk space which it can't or taking a lot of time to pull together.

You could try getting rid of some files if your HD is quite full don't forget you need to hit the trash to fully clear the space. That is if you can gain access to the finder.

If that doesn't work I'm sorry to say theres little one can do to savage your recording and you'll need to forcefully restart your system.

A 10 hour recording is quite large I'm not sure if your system has the needed resources to sustain that length.

I would first max out the memory 3GB (use two 2GB memory modules 4GB). Your Mac can't use the last 1GB but using two 2GB modules will give you interleaved memory which is faster than mixing two different sizes (use a matched set).

Next, your HD either is on the small side and/or very full. Think about upgrading it to a larger size or use a defragmentation app like Drive Genius (which I use and love). First get rid of any old files or consider moving stuff off onto an external drive for your long term storage. Make a backup of everything thats left. Then using another bootable drive (CD/DVD, ext HD or fresh drive via FireWire {Best!} or USB), run Apples Disk Utility (or Drive Genius) to verify and if needed fix your low level services. Then defrag your drive. I do this yearly and the performance of my systems are much more stable and faster than systems that haven't been cleaned up.
