I can not format new hard drive in Disk Utility. The hard drive is listed as Media, when i select drive and hit Erase tab no buttons are highlighted so i unable to format drive. The same with all the tabs on the bottom of disk utility( S.M.A.R.T Status not Supported).
System Profiler does list hard drive message, ( There was an error while scanning for serial-ATA devices. )

The drive is most likely a 6 Gb/s drive and your system BUS is slower. See if you can use the jumper pins to slow it down so your machine can recognize it. Give us the make and model of the drive and the last three figures of your serial number and we can get you to the correct settings.

Yes - there's something wrong with the cable, connector or drive. You don't state which drive you have... maybe it's SATA speed is wrong for your machine (also generically described). The more facts you give us... the more helpful we can be.
