Why aren't my ring tones working on my iPhone 4?

My ringtone and text alert tones stopped working today. The volume buttons work and when I sample the ringtone the phone plays all sounds except keyboard clips. Then, when someone calls or texts me the sound doesn't go off and it doesn't ring. Please help. I need to know when people call or text me.

Answer this question I have this problem too

Is this a good question?

Go to Settings>> General>>Accessibility>> Assistive touch. Then you can toggle the silent option from there. You will probably need to change the part if you want the button to work.

Thank you for the solution. It worked for me. The switch stopped responding after we put it in silent, and I couldn't hear the phone ring or hear text messages come in. This was a wonderful work around for me. Thanks for explaining. Figured out the rest of the steps...

1. Turn AssistiveTouch on.

2. Tap the white button that shows up on the screen (like a new virtual home button).

3. Tap 'device'.

4. Tap Unmute. ...and Voilla, phone rings again - Yay!

5. Turn Assistive Touch off to get rid of the white button.

If you have tried all the alternatives and your phone still does not ring, your side switch may be broken-like mine was. I just discovered an app that bypasses this switch and gets your phone to work. It is called SilentAlert from app store. Its not free, but at least it solved my problem.

THANK YOU!

SilentAlert saved me from getting the switch replaced or buying a new phone.

My switch was stuck with sound on ALL the time, a big nuisance at work.

It was a very good advice , now my phone does not vibrate and it rings .

I used Assistive touch for controlling the silent button because it dos not work any more. and then I went to the Sounds in setting and turn of the vibrate . you can check it by calling yourself with another phone :)

Partial answer, and a problem.

No. For me, after changing my battery, my sound slide, side volume buttons, volume icon, and default sounds all stopped working. I restored settings. Nothing. I worked to clean the charging base, and as I touched the left upper side of it inside the phone, suddenly my slide bar started to return to various applications. As I worked to gently press the charging bar, the volume slide stayed and remained stable. Partial success. When in settings, sounds, "change with buttons", as I pressed with a plastic tool on the charging bar, the volume icon (showing the bell, and the incremental volume slide), momentarily appeared (almost success, but I'm clearly on the right trail, unless this is two separate problem, i.e. buttons and sounds not functioning as they did pre battery change), and then faded out. I also tried to clean both the headphone and charging area with alcohol and compressed air. It helped a bit. I feel the charging bar may have some dirt on it, but so far no luck with the buttons or vulpine icon. I do have sound, but not default system sounds (though when pressed in settings, sound, they all function), and the mute and volume buttons, (fully functional, all, until changing the battery, all fail to function. I've taken the batter out and then replaced it (when new and wet.... with complete success. I'm SO frustrated. I've wasted hours attempting to restore these functions. The accessibility control is useful for sound, but is cumbersome and blocks one of the main controls in YouTube.

I have a similar problem.

The switch itself flicks (it's not stuck) however it doesn't vibrate or make any sound. The volume buttons don't work either however I can still hear music. My sound doesn't work for things where the silent button is needed to be off (ex. Instagram videos, snapchat videos, etc.). I have tried going on to settings and turning it off silent but it still doesn't work. I've also tried turning it on and off and I haven't dropped it. Please help!

Mine just started working again as I tried using assistive touch and it now works. Bit upset that the switch itself no longer works however.

Plugg your phone to the computer. Open the folder "Apple Devise". (It will pop-up)

Type in the consoles "iphone(detect)/:options/:general/:sound/:volume/:call/:100;;;end;code"

That is the hard way.

Or you just go to the options and sound.

That is the easy way.

on incoming calls, i had no ringtone or vibrate. First i changed the vibrator, but that didn't help.

So it became clear the silentswitch was gone while in silent-mode. I didn't feel like switching the audio-flex-cable, so i bought SilentAlert. Silentalert did the trick for me. At least, ringtone is back. vibrate still not working....

We changed the battery and it was bad , and didn't show actual charge , cause it was 65% and never moved till it was dead so I fix it send a replacement battery and all the battery issues are solved but now she has no ring tone or text tones! U can move the slide button and nothing happens???
