Should I just buy a battery? It did say "Replace soon."
Is this a good question?

Yes - batteries do not last forever. Under proper use 3 to 5 years is the length of a laptop battery, but you can kill one in months if you don't follow proper discharge/charging procedures.
Batteries have software that shows "cycle" counts - many batteries with cycles over 300 are nearing the end of their life time. Lithium-based batteries like the one in your computer have a useful life of 400-500 charge cycles. A properly maintained notebook battery should maintain 80% health for 300 cycles.
