Optical drive not recognized, damaged logic board?

So I recently replaced a damaged optical drive in my 2.16 a1211 with a superdrive and now the optical drive is not recognized. In fact, the computer won't boot whatsoever - it freezes and tells me to restart. If I boot into target mode the optical drive is not recognized by the host computer (although the hard drive is) and if I boot into "option" mode the drive is also not recognized.
However
It receives power. I can input discs and eject them just fine. So something is really goofy. Is this is a damaged logic board, bent pins, what?
Edit: with a 10.6.6 install disc inserted it does appear to be recognized. However, this does not help at all as I still cannot boot into OS X and still get that grey screen! Even attempting to boot into safe mode does not work

Is the 10.6.6 the disk for a newer different machine?

Interesting development.
So now, the hard drive is no longer recognized by OS X. So it boots to a flat grey screen, no apple logo. Install disc 10.6.6. is not recognized either. 10.6 is definitely from a newer machine. This is probably like 10.4.something. Target mode - nothing is recognized.
Anyway, if i put in a new hard drive, the install disc is recognized but the new hard drive is not. After I "repaired permissions" is when things went sour for my other hard drive, and then when I have it plugged into the computer, no install discs aren't read either. It doesn't make any sense to me.
