Display has gone dark. Can only be seen faintly.

The display has gone dark. The laptop boots up just fine and everything. Things are visible faintly especially under bright surroundings. I believe the back light may have fused or something. I checked with apple care, they are saying 600$ to replace the entire display. The laptop is out of warranty and want to try fixing it myself. Please help.

First try an external monitor and if you have good video do as lemerise suggest and check the inverter and inverter cable. In fact check all cables to the LCD. Since you say you can faintly see video your logic board is probably good. Ralph

Before you replace be sure that's your problem by hooking up an external monitor. If you have good video there here are the URL's for the LCD/ Ralph

Looking at the part cost unless you can find it elsewhere for less money you might want to let Apple do it. Of course you would not have the same guarantee
