Sounds like a bad hard drive, when hard drives die, they produce a rythmatic clicking noise. This would also prevent the iPod from booting.

You will need a 1.8" ZIF hard drive, and depending on the version of the iPod, it will need to be either 5mm or 8mm thick. iFixit should sell them.

Hi,

try to restore the iPod via iTunes. If it doesn´t works, the hard drive seems to be damaged. Any sign that somebody maybe dropped it?

SOunds like a bad hard drive, get one right here (unfortunately they only have 120GB drives, not 160).

If you "downgrade" to an other drive than the 160GB hard drive, don't forget to buy a new hard drive cable as well. This comment applies to the thick 160GB drive, i don't know if the thin drive has an other cable as well.
