I would bet that changing the hard drive cable would solve your problems. This has become my most common repair on this series of machine. Take a look at all the 90 degree angles this cable has to make. I would not get a used cable for this repair: MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2009/Mid 2010) Hard Drive Cable

From what you have stated it does sound like your HD is in trouble. Not much more we can offer you here.

You do have a few options here:

1 - Get an external HD to run your system on. You should really get a FireWire external HD if you do this, USB drives are very slow on this system (your systems USB port is not USB3).

2 - You could try replacing the drive your self (review the iFixIt guide)

I should point out having an external HD is very useful (once you get your internal fixed) as you can use it to save your important stuff and by having a working system on it you can use it to help in maintaining your system.

Good Luck
