Can't boot to newly installed hard disk

I've got a new hard disk for the "PowerBook". Im trying to format the new disk using OS X 10.5.4 CD.

I keep getting a message saying "you need to restart your computer. Hold down the power button for several seconds or press the restart button."

Do anyone know how I can get over this issue? I have visited some forum site which have advised me on using option keys methods but these haven't helped?

Many thanks in advanced?

So if I get a copy of OS X Tiger will it boot and start the install process?

According to Mactracker your computer will run 10.4.11. Ralph

You do not have the processor speed of 867 MHz to even install 10.5

How far do you come - does the kernel panic come before you are able to enter the setup or does it come after you formatted the disc ?

how large is the new hard disc ?

did you try to boot in verbose mode ?

maybe this should give you a little bit more information about the error

It is a 100GB disk? Kernal panic comes before setup. I tried the verbose mode but it didn't progress to anything? The computer was using a version 1 down to OS X 10.5.4. Would that be an issue?

I've tried formatting the disk using some software to HFS+ but that hasn't made a difference...
