my Laptop Acer 5315 series has no indication of any power. I just bought a new charger and same thing. what should I pay attention to when I start taking it apart? is there any lights inside that could point to the source of the problem? Thanks

Try removing the battery and powering up with just the AC adapter

From the 5310 service manual which I believe is similar to the 5315 and has been uploaded and linked on the 5315 device page

Power System Check

To verify the symptom of the problem, power on the computer using each of the following power sources:

1. Remove the battery pack.

2. Connect the power adapter and check that power is supplied.

3. Disconnect the power adapter and install the charged battery pack; then check that power is supplied by the battery pack.

Attached are a couple of excerpts from the manual that may be useful. As they are from the 5310 manual the voltages may not be accurate.

May also be worth checking the connections onto the main board - I have highlighted in YELLOW the battery connector

BTW If I am incorrect about the similarities between the 5315 and 5310 please let me know and I'll correct the information accordingly.

Hi Richdave! Thank you for you answer. The diagrams you attached look identical to my laptop. I took it apart today and noticed the following:

1) the DC-power jack has power according to the voltmeter.

2) thought the LED light in the front of the laptop does not lid up.

Unfortunately the battery has been discharged for a while and I can't try to power the laptop with it.

Do you think it's the motherboard that's bad? Any other ways to check for sure?

Are you getting power to the main board? Check the voltage on PJP1 DC-in Power Jack. The voltage between the RED and BLACK wires on the connector should be the same as on the power adapter. If not unplug the connector PJP1 from the board an measure again. If still not correct then the DC jack or associated cable may be faulty.

by

yes, i'm getting the power on PJP1 DC-in Power Jack. Same as on power adapter.

not meaning to butt in, just downloaded the schematic for your laptop on here. Just scroll all the way down to Documents and click on the link.

More the merrier oldturkey! I'll take copy of the diagram myself :-)

Remove battery, remove ac adapter and open the lid of the laptop and press the power button.

Keep it pressed for 15 seconds with no power source attached and then release it.

Put in the battery and plug in the adapter: It should work fine provided there is no further hardware damage or issue.

This also worked with my aspire 5742z.

This just brought my ASUS q500a back to life. Can anyone tell me why this works though?

by

Yes, when laptop unexpectedly shuts down for some reason, as an inbuilt programming it tends to save the state to prevent further damage. Pressing power key without any power source discharges the power stored in electric components and then it starts from scratch rather than trying to restore to its original state.

Reflow the northbridge on the motherboard and the computer will boot. The northbridge controls the 1/0 bit that tells the laptop to power on.

It happens alot on compaqs and acers.

SecondByte, this was a great idea and worth of shot. Unfortunately, I either didn't do it right or smth else but it didn't work for me. I guess i'm stuck with buying a new motherboard. Thanks a lot for your input though, I'll remember this for the future.
