Back cover of iPad "Wifi only" usable?

Hello,

Here is the story: The back plate of an iPad 2 Wifi & 3G needs to be replaced. Unfortunately, I was given a "Wifi only" back plate rather than a "Wifi & 3G" one.

Although there was a SIM Card in the slot, the owner of the iPad told me that he doesn't need or work via the SIM Card but via Wifi only.

I was wondering if it is possible to use this new back plate at all. Can I just fix the card unit with adhesive tape (there are no holes, of course, for it)?

This is my first repair of an iPad, so I would appreciate any input.

Without a plastic back the G3 cellar services won't work. Best to get the correct case assembly.

Hi Dan,

Thank you for your response.

Yes, you are right. I compared both back plates with one another and found additional physical differences. They are different types after all.

It should fit. Do not install SIM card tray and the top antennas, everything else stays the same

The cellar network antenna will be missing and it needs a non metal cover to access the net. <Bottom line won't work>

Hi Dan, Steffen said the owner doesn't need cellular functions. So it is possible to work, without cellular forever.

Still, I recommend selling the back plate to someone who really needs it, Steffen.

What if he sells it? I don't like removing major features like this. Remember the system still thinks it has G3 services as well.

The system will display " NO SIM" on the top, since you didn't even put a SIM card slot. Also GPS will not work because it has no top antennas. Otherwise it's just like an iPad wifi only.

Hi Tom and Dan, thank you for your comments. I compared the two plates again, and it seems that I could actually use the back plate of the "Wifi only". However and as you both indicated, in this case the G3 antennas don't fit and needed to be removed. Nobody would notice (i.e. see) this difference. The good news is: I was able to "convince" the owner that a proper plate would be the "better" way. So, I will get the right back plate after all. In any case, Thank You!
