Dual hard drive gets "lost"

Hello!

I have a 64gb ssd as system disk and additionally a 500gb hdd as data disk in a pata optical bay enclosure. all works great and quick, but randomly after awaking from sleep mode the data disk is "lost". not visible in finder, not visible in diskutil. after a restart the data disk is here again. disk check with diskutil or DriveDx show no errors on the disks.

any ideas?

Chosen Solution

Yes, this can happen.

The cause is the disk has a slow startup (often with older 5400RPM disks) as the disk is spun down when in sleep mode. When you wake your system the OS on the SSD is so fast in loading it doesn't wait for it.

You could upgrade the disk to a newer faster RPM drive or you can use a disk mounter program (which is what I use) Mountain

Sounds logically, thanks for the fast reply!

It is indeed a slow 5400 rpm disk.

I just googled a free tool for mounting disks:
