MacTracker says Aluminum MacBook 13" can go up to 8 GB. True/works?

My girlfriend is starting to bump into memory issues with her MacBook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008), model A1278, when running larger apps (Aperture, etc.) and/or multiple apps simultaneously, etc.

Unfortunately we can't afford a new machine at this time, so I thought a RAM upgrade would give a quick and relatively inexpensive performance boost.

Anyway according to both Apple and Crucial, this machine maxes out at 4 GB RAM, which is what we've got in there now; however MacTracker says it can go up to 8 GB, and I vaguely remember reading on various websites that that is indeed the case.

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience upgrading one of these machines to >4 GB and how it has worked out for you.

Also is there any special type/speed/etc. of RAM I should buy, or just the standard DDR3 PC3-8500, DDR3 (non-ECC) that this machine according to the machine's specs?

Thanks!

Stick with RAM from companies selling Apple RAM to avoid headaches.

*Apple officially supports a maximum of 4 GB of RAM. Originally, this model was only unofficially capable of stably supporting 6 GB of RAM, but as confirmed by site sponsor OWC, it is capable of supporting 8 GB of RAM if updated to Boot ROM Version MB51.007D.B03 and running MacOS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard" or higher.

Hi,

I just installed 8GB of ddr3 1333 ram, since 1066 is hard to get in shops, and didnt want to order over internet. So far works like a charm!

mac accepts full 8GB, and in about this mac it even displays as being 1333 instead of 1066. Could be that it just shows exact info and still downgrades to 1066 though, not sure about that
