Why did the buttons stop working?

I was handed a 5th gen iPod Video and the screen was cracked. I bought the replacement screen here from iFixit and followed all of the instructions. After reassembling the iPod the screen works flawlessly, however the only button that the iPod is responding to is the "Hold / Lock" button.

Any help?
