Yes! it can. It has an Intel Core 2 Duo chip which is the first clean 64bit chip.
You should also think about upping the RAM and if you have the original HD (160GB) also upping it as well (250 or bigger).

This system can run the latest version of OS X 10.8 "Mountain Lion," although it does not support the AirDrop or AirPlay Mirroring features. It is not supported booting into 64-bit mode when running Mac OS X 10.6 "Snow Leopard." It does support "OpenCL" and Grand Central Dispatch.
