Many vertical lines have been slowly appearing on the screen. They seem to multiply as time goes on and now there are about 100. Is this a motherboard problem or something simpler?

yas - it's simpler - but not cheap - 1pixel lines, mostly in different colors are a screen problem - your lcd is the problem.
it is a contact problem that mostly is not fixable - the easiest way is to get a new lcd

To confirm the diagnosis hook up an external monitor and see what your picture looks like. If it is good then you have confirmed the LCD is the problem. Ralph
