iPod freezes, reset, works for a few days, then freezes again

My ipod classic is only used in my car. It started freezing, my car stereo doesn't recognize it, I reset it and it is fine for a few days--sometimes less--before it goes through the same routine. Always able to reset, but don't know what to replace to take care of this.

Please help!

debbie, place your Classic into diagnostics mode and run the test. Right now my first inclination is that it is your hard drive that is starting to fail.

How do you do that?

Here is a great tutorial about how to get the iPod into diagnostics mode and what the results mean.

Thanks for the reply!

I really just want to know where to start. This has really helped.

I did the diagnostics test but when I clicked on the check for the hard drive, I was only given 2 options: HDSpecs and HDSMARTData. There was no HDScan or HDRW. I'm thinking this could be because the HD is failing?

I have replaced hard drives in ipods before, so I would be thrilled if this is the problem.

BTW-I have reset and restored a few times prior to this. Hopefully replacing the HD will be the right place to start!

I went ahead and ordered a new hard drive tonight, as, when it was resetting, I could hear some crunching sounds--which also tells me it's the hard drive.

I had never heard of the diagnostics mode before--thanks again for the help. Hopefully it will last awhile! Thanks again!

I would restore. It is probably a software issue.
