Screen Issue - not sure

Greetings,

The screen started acting strangely -- vertical lines down the screen, shaking then freezing.

After a few restarts, the desktop came up and I was able to run disk utility and the hard drive is fine.

I took the machine apart to check connections, and everything looked fine.

Now, I get a grey screen with the apple, appears to be starting up properly, then goes to a blue screen with the mouse, which works (no OS X startup).

I've reset the PMU and PRAM, with the same result. My reading leads me to believe its the graphics processor on the logic board, however I've tried the shim idea to no avail.

Since my symptoms are a bit different than what I've read, I just wanted to confer with the experts before I try to resolder the chip. ($400 for an antiquated logic board -- wow!)

Thanks for the advice!

First off try using an external monitor to see if the problem is the logic board or the LCD. If the logic board you already know your options but if the LCD there are several possibilities. Let us know what you find and we will go from there. Ralph

Hi Ralph, thanks for the speedy reply -- I did a test with an external monitor, and they mirrored each other. blue screen, movable mouse. Any further test I should try? much appreciated!

Hello Amanda, I posting a URL on replacing the logic board. Study it and see if you think you can do it. If so and you can get one for the price Chris mentions I'd go for it. Unless the unit has sentimental value I would not spend more than $100 repairing it--more than that you can replace it. Good luck. Ralph

If you do need to replace the logic board, you can get one on eBay for about $65 for one like this but you should try to troubleshoot it further before replacing parts.
