cant update safari and iTUNES

im trying to update my safari and iTUNES however when do this safari will its 30 out of 30mb then switch to iTUNES but the safari download will not go through it just leaves a red circle with a white ! in the middle and gives a message that says -3 B is required to download and install the checked updates. Extra space is required for the optimization process. To free up space, remove files from your startup disk, then try again. but my mac hd on the desk top and the finder as well says i i have 29gb of free space and the itunes is a 97.3mb file and when i select it to download it starts downloading on the progress bar but only says its downloading a 36.7mb file instead of the 97.3 and after it gets to 36.7 it just keeps going then says it cant download it. can anyone help?????????

Normally Apple says 5 GB is required to optimize the drive. Are you certain you have 29GB free space? If so how large is your drive? Normally you need at least 10% free space to download and optimize so if you have a 300 GB drive your free space of 29GB might be inadequate for your downloads. Looking at your drive are there any unused programs that can be deleted to give you more space? Ralph

I would agree at this point you have enough unused space on your drive.try booting to your system disk and selecting utilities/disk repair. Run disk repair until it reports no trouble found. Reboot normally and see if you are able to download properly. Ralph

I went under disk utilities and it only let me do verify disk it wouldnt let me select disk repair but when i did the verify disk it popped up saying Volume Header needs minor repair

The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

1 HFS volume checked

Volume needs repair

Sounds as though you may need to do an archive and install of your operating system/ Before you do I would do a good backup of all my important data (includes photos and music) as there is always a possibility of problems requiring a format and install. After you archive and install try updating Safari and itunes before merging the archive with the new OS. Ralph
