Why are recordings using internal microphone very noisy?

The background noise using Audacity with the internal microphone is too high to make usable recordings for broadcast.

If I use an external USB microphone the noise isn't there.

There is also very high noise on receiving end of Skype calls(sounds like a truck driving through the room I am told)

What could be the problem?

Your facing a common problem here. The type of microphone had a big impact on what you're recording.

Here's a good write up on the differences Directional Characteristics

The microphone mounted on the MBP is designed for FaceTime (wide angle and far distance) use an Omnidirectional design. In the case of an iPhone it has two Cardioid microphones so it can do background sound cancelation and has a limited sensitivity so it does not pickup sound at a distance unlike the MBP microphone.

Even the construction of the microphone can make the angular pickup very narrow and even amplify it so you can hear a distant conversation.

So if you want something for broadcast you'll want to invest on a good set of microphones and use the correct one for the task.
