Hi there. I have a MacBook (last 3 serial numbers: x97). I'm a student and therefore upgrading MacBooks is really tough.
I need to upgrade my laptop and don't know what is the latest logic board I can use. I can't find this info anywhere and therefore I need help.
Right now I have the core duo 1.87ghz. Please help me with this.

I think you're between a rock and a hard place here. Sorry ;-{
Yes there is a CPU step (2.0GHz) logic board you could try to locate but given the cost and what you'll have afterwards its not much of a bump for the work and risks.
I would focus on maxing the RAM (4 GB using two 2GB modules - 667 MHz PC2-5300 DDR2 SDRAM - you'll get 3GB here of available RAM) and think about getting a faster (larger) HD. The costs and risks are the least given the gains in performance.
Lastly, take your old HD and mount it into an external FireWire case and use it as a backup fro your important files. FW cases are becoming harder to find in your case its the best external I/O Vs USB.
Save your pennies for a newer system (used) if you find your still not getting what you want in performance after the RAM & HD upgrades.

Scott - Please note you can go to 3GB on this system using 2-2GB modules. The last 1GB of the 4GB is not addressable. Mixing 1-1GB & 1-2GB modules is not effective as you loose the interleave. And, going with 2-1GB (2GB) as you altered my answer with just isn't enough to be worth doing (and not much cheaper either). Newer modules are also more efficient (power&heat).
