MacBook Pro 4.1, no boot; odd whine and click on left side.

When powered on, the DVD drive spins up, as soon as that completes there is a high pitched whine, followed by a loud click, both emanating from the left hand side of the machine.

Both left and right fans spin up, as does the DVD drive, produces POST without ram, both checked in primary slot with still no boot. No visual response from screen or power button.

Thanks for any help.

Are you trying to boot from a CD/DVD? The CD/DVD could be warped hitting the internal case causing the whine. Otherwise your fans could be rubbing there housings (worn bearing). The Click I suspect is the CD/DVD drive coming alive. Can you give us some more details on what happened before, as well as if you can boot up with an external HD or Thumb drive which has a good working system.

Connect to an external monitor to see if there's cable/LCD damage, you might see something that way.
