4s Only charges when turned off, not recognized by itunes

My phone quit charging when it's turned on. If I shut it off, it charges fine (but slow), but I use it enough that I charge it a couple times a day.. so shutting it off means I miss calls mid-day.

I replaced the battery & pentalobe screws with the kit from ifixit, but my problem remains (although the new battery gives me longer life between charges).

Could it be the dock? I figured if the dock was bad it wouldn't charge at all, but since it charges when powered off maybe the dock is fine & I have an internal board issue.

I'd hate to lose the info on the 4s, and I cant back it up because itunes wont recognize it when plugged into my laptop... just says "unrecognized USB device", tried Apple & aftermarket charging cords (and they all work fine on my ipad). Not sure if it's related or not but it all occurred about the same time, after I dropped it (but its in an Otterbox case).

I was hesitant about changing the docking connector, since the phone charged when it was turned off. But I ordered one anyway, since $40 is better than the $200 AT&T quoted for a new phone. I figured I would trust what the people here advised.

IT WORKED!! The instructions are very clear. Suggestions to look for a piece of plastic covering the mic were well-advised, since there IS a piece of clear plastic protecting the mic. Other than that, all I can advise is to make sure the tube of the rubber mic protector faces AWAY from the gold chip. The mic is mounted on the opposite, black surface.

So... An old, tech-challenged dude like me, mid-50's and using reading glasses (because I don't have a magnifying glass) was able to successfully change this docking port in under an hour on the kitchen table.

I think I have the same issue and I am in the mid-50.s too jajaja, I will swap the parts from a broken one. Keep on it, we are in the time when we know how to do things the rightway

I changed the docking connector but no luck, the problem persists. Is there anyone out there that has any advise?

Have a similiar issue with the original connector cable (usb to port) from Apple; I connect it and iphone starts charging, then, suddenly it disconnects, reconnects and so on (does happen from one second to the other).

I bought a "no name" cable at the super market, as I wanted to have one cable with me and the other one connected to my macmini and this cable does not make any problems at all.

I also have an iPhone 4S that only charges when it's turned off and is not recognized by iTunes. I just replaced the dock port and that didn't fix the problem.

Phone broke when I tried wiring a USB cable and got the polarity backwards. From my reading, it seems possible that either the replacement dock connector was bad (cheap part from China) or the logic board needs to be replaced. Something about the logic board having a small fuse that may have been blown.

Post if you figure it out.

I replaced the battery, I replaced the docking connector (in a service store), I already made a reinstall. Sometimes it charges, sometimes not. If it recognizes a new device where it's charged from, or a new cable, it works fine for the first time. After that it doesn't charge neither. This problem seems to be a software problem for me.

I'll try a clean install maybe this week. A total factory reset. And installing all my apps and contacts manually, not from backup. Let's see what happens.

Another additional info: my iPhone 4s is 4,5 years old, I already replaced display and power button a year ago and worked/works properly except of this new issue.
