Why does my iPhone 3GS just turn off?

My iPhone turns off automatically and won't turn back on till its on the charger and it will hold a charge sometimes but when I plug it in the battery is dead when I've charged it for a few hours.

How long does it hold the charge for after you've plugged it in for a couple hours? Did this happen all of a sudden or has it been a slow decline in battery life?

It sounds like your battery might have reached the end of it's life. Check out the Battery Replacement Guide for more information on replacing it.
