Sound on my phone not working except for when playing music?

I accidentally set my phone down on a table that had water on it, however my phone has a case so i thought it was protected from water damage. A couple days later the phone stopped making the clicking noise that i usually does when you turn it on and unlock it. I don't know if this has anything to do with the aforementioned event. I tried playing music, and sound came out of the speakers but my apps that require sound are not working. I have tried rebooting the phone and cleaning out the hole in which the end of a pair of headphones is inserted and nothing changed. Also, I am aware there is a lock sound option in settings and it is turned on. How can I fix my phone? What is the cause of this?
