If you can connect your laptop to an external display, please do so and see if anything shows up.

Adam, it doesn't boot.

I'm pretty sure that with the switch to Intel (I know this is true of my Black MacBook of the next generation up and my Retina MacBook Pro) came the muting of the startup chime if the speaker volume was muted at shutdown. So it could still be booting and just be a display issue.

Hello,

I think of two things:

1 - The hard drive is broken

2 - OSX system on the hard disk is broken ...

therefore:

1 - Boot from the installation DVD (DVD ready inserted and hold the "C")

2 - If your hdd detects made a clean installation

3 - if it does not detect your hdd disassembled your computer and test another HDD

Sounds like he had it lying around for awhile before he decided to sell it. If that is the case you may need to reset the SMC. Follow these instructions: Resetting the SMC. Also make sure your battery & charger are working.

Next, try an external monitor to see if the display has gone on you. And lastly, reseat the memory modules.

Eldoctor is correct. Most likely you just need to reinstall the operating system, if that doesn't work you need to reinstall the operating system on a new hard drive. If you need help doing either one, message me at james@tronicstrade.com. I can send you step by step instructions
