Why doesnt my control knob "click" when turning, trips breaker?

the control knob spins freely...no "clicking" sound at all. also it wont push in or pull out... when i plug it in , it trips the breaker. it worked well until that one day...

mike radcliff, since it trips your breaker, you have a definite short circuit in your washer. Remember that water and electricity don't match. You do want to be careful with that. The short could be anywhere from the washer motor, to the timer motor, the start capacitor, as well as the timer itself. It all depends now on how technically inclined you are. I would disconnect the washer motor and see if that makes a difference. After that check the timer and see what is going on in there. Check for obvious signs of a short circuit, i.e. charred or missing components. Again, be careful with the power on this. Hope this helps, good luck.
