Power light comes on, screen never does.

MacBook Pro 15" Core 2 Duo Models A1226 and A1260 Troubleshooting

A friend of mine dropped off an older macbook pro (A1260) that wouldn't turn on. After some troubleshooting I removed the battery, held the power button and then plugged in the ac adapter. It booted up right away!

Now 8 hours later, he comes to pick it up and the same issue recurred, except now it won't resume period. is there a known fix for issues like this?

The power comes on, drive spins up, and the pc heats up quite a bit if I leave it alone, the display just never comes on. I have also tried connecting it to an external display to no avail

Thanks for any tips, I'm not really much of a mac guy but since this didn't seem like an OS rooted issue I took a look at it.

If the battery goes bad or gets below 20% on this machine it generally will not boot. It has a better chance of booting if you are using a 85 watt AC power adapter. Press the test button on the battery and see if it's fully charged. Even if it is fully charged, it may still not be 20% OF THE ORIGINAL CAPACITY. Let us know your results and we can go from there.

Thank you for the reply, I'm not at home to follow up on the instructions now but I have some further comment on my earlier troubleshooting.

When I got it to boot initially, it was with just the ac adapter connected and the battery removed, the last time I tested the battery button it came up as fully charged as well.

When it booted earlier too it came up to a resume state with the desktop faded and a loading bar for about a minute, and it picked up from where it had been when the lid was last shut. It seems to be a problem resuming from a sleep state right now.

More than likely you have the famous faulty graphics card. There's a couple of things you can do. First blow out the heatsinks to clear from dust.

Next grab a towel.

Turn on the machine, and wrap it in the towel while placing it upside down.

The heat will reflow the graphics card back on while the computer is basically lying on the apple logo side (screen)

Let it sit with the towel wrapped for a few mins 10-20 mins

Then turn it off and let it cool slowly 20 mins or so.

Put it back how it should stand and try to power it noses if anything Happens.
