I inherited a G5 17 w/2.0 processor. The boot up process is strange to me. At the beginning there is a head which gives me a question mark, then the apple logo and then a screen which is non-descript. This is my first apple, please someone steer me in the right direction !!

You probably have a bad hard drive but here is the troubleshooting guide from Apple. Give it a try and let us know how it works out. Ralph
