White screen (nothing else). Works perfectly with external screen.

Hi Everybody,

My MBP suddenly went white while I was watching a movie. I manually restarted it but it only displays white on the screen and nothing else (no logos, no spinning balls - the sound is working fine though).

I could use it blindfolded (I can log into it, run Terminal.app then type 'say hello' and I can hear 'Hello') so I connected external screen and confirmed that everything is working fine.

Questions 1: What are the chances that it is LVDS cable issue (how can you test without buying one:)?

Questions 2: Is it definitely screen problem?

Questions 3: If it is screen problem, can I replace the screen from my old MBP (Apple MacBook Pro "Core 2 Duo" 2.26 13" (SD/FW)) - will the screen fit?

Thank you very much for all your answers and concerns.

DIY "shade tree" test procedures are pretty limited. Since the external monitor works fine the problem is most likely in the internal chain... the cable would be the easiest cheapest place to start. I know of no DIY way to test/eliminate the cable other than swapping.

I will try to swap the cable out. I don't mind going and buying a spare screen but kinda afraid that both of them do not solve my issue. I will let you know how I go. Thanks for your answer, machead3

You could take it to a genius bar if you're still in warranty.

Not under warranty anymore:) How much would it cost just to get it examined, do you know by any chance?
