Why does vibrator not work after back case replacement?

Replaced back cover and once back together, everything appears to work except the vibrator. When I remove the screen to test the vibrator, it works when I flip switch to silent, but each time I put the screen back in, it no longer vibrates. I suspect the silence switch is getting shorted when I install the screen. Any ideas?

UPDATE: In further testing, I found the silence switch does not mute any sounds either.

Hi gatesmith,

I apologize for my delayed response.

Great that you have another 3GS available where you can use parts from. I recommend using the flex cable of the headphone/volume/silent-switch/power-switch of it and put it in your phone. Then I would check if it works.

In regard to using a multimeter: I haven't checked the circuit of the silent-switch yet (pin allocation). However, if you use the removed flex cable, you might be able to find the pinout for the silent-switch. Just trace the two circuits leading from the silent-switch to the connector. Then take the multimeter, put it on continuity test, and turn the switch. If the connection is still good, you should get a signal when turning the switch.

Another idea I would recommend is to visually check the immediate area around the connector on the motherboard where the resistors are soldered on (the connector is labeled as J1_AP ; bottom left). Are there any traces of a possible occurred burn visible?

gatesmith,

It is difficult to say where the problem is actually located.

But in any case, I would check the silent switch first. Remove the motherboard and check out that area (position of switch; flex cable; etc.).

Is there a way for you to test the switch for function in this open condition, for example with a multimeter?

Thank you, I could check it with a multi-meter. I found a connection I do not like the looks of. Fortunately, I have another 3GS which I now intend to further strip for parts. It would be nice to know how to check it with the multi-meter if you have time to explain.
