My Macbook Pro restarts happily but when i do a shut down it wont start unless i first hold down command option p r. PRAM
this is a clean install.
the start up gets as far as the apple.
thanks for any suggestions

You might have answered your own question!
Your PRAM battery (CMOS to us windows folk) may be dead / dying. Each battery is supposed to output a certain amount of power to keep your computer's settings intact even when it is off.
I would assume your PRAM battery is dead, and zapping it allows you to boot.
