No sound from external speaker.

i bought this phone used, knowing that the external speaker didn't work. figured i could fix it.

i get all audio through the headphones, and the phone recognizes the difference between headphones present, and headphones not present. i also get music when docked, but i haven't heard any rining or notification noises through any docked equipment. all volumes that i'm aware of are turned up to the max.

bought a complete speaker unit, and replacement dock connector assembly/home button. first tried replacing just the speaker unit. no change. so i changed out the dock connector assembly, and still no change. not sure where to go from this point. please help!

Update

the ringer switch was off, and thats why i wasn't getting any of the operational sounds through my dock equipment. however, even with the switch now switched on, i still don't get anything through the loud speaker.

i have not yet tried a restore since changing out the parts. but it was restored prior to that.

i've been doing some more reading, and i see a lot of recommendations to clean parts with alcohol if there was any water damage... maybe this is the case with this phone, and i need to clean my ribbon cable connection. that will be my next attempt when i've got time.

Have to ask, have you double checked that the ringer switch above the volume buttons isn't toggled to silent?

Have you attempted a restore?

From experience I have found if you push firmly to the right of the home button you may or may not get sound.

Do this:

Take your pointing finger and thumb and squeeze like a vice just a little to the right of the home button while you have music playing.

If this works, you most likely need to replace the speaker assembly. You can also try ensuring the headphone jack has NO obstructions or water dmg.

Opening the phone to give it a good alcohol wipedown probably wont do much, but its something else to try.

Good luck!

as i mentioned in the original post, i've already swaped out the speaker unit, and the phone recognizes the difference between headphones present, and headphones not present.

is there some other way that the headphone jack can cause this problem, other than the headphones present/headphones not present switch?

the headphone jack can get very dusty inside that can cause the headphones to not function just right, if this doesn't work try installing a new headphone jack and if that didn't work either then you might want to consider changing the logic board.
