Will I need a new screen all together?

a friend gave me his MacBook Pro because the front bazel broke and the screen doesnt show anything. i looked at the screen closly and the backlight works, but nothing shows up. i tryed connecting it to a monitor, but after about 6 minutes it just stoped displaying everything, so i was wondering if theres a small park that needs to be replaced or the entire screen assembly needs to be replaced. the model number for this is A1229, ive looked for parts, but an entire screen assembly is really expensive. thanks in advance

If your video fails connected to an external monitor you have a VGU (VGC) logic board failure. The only DIY repair for this failure is to replace the entire logic board. It is an advanced DIY. You would want to have all the recommended tools, and follow the exact guide for your macbook pro.

Only you can determine if you are capable, and if the expense is cost effective.
