The only way I can get the machine to boot is to hold down power for 10 seconds, and then keep it held for another 10 secs after attaching magsafe.
If I shutdown it won't power on again by power alone.Have to repeat the above.
Magsafe light is on ok, BTW.
Also, won't power on by any means if battery is attached.
Can you help?

Sounds like you need to reset the SMC, heres the Apple TN on the needed steps. Give that a try first and let us know if that solved it.
