jgrock1, "the iPhone 4 can be clearly detected by the metal frame on the outer edges. The iPhone 4S has both the metal frame on the outer edges the iPhone 4S’ mute button and the volume keys are raised just a little bit compared to the older model, it is quite a minute difference. The iPhone 4 come in both CDMA and GSM the CMDA model has no SIM slot, while the GSM model has a SIM slot. But with only one break in the antenna at the top, and the 4S has a SIM slot and a break at both the top and the bottom of the side antenna." from here Also, if your phone comes on, go to Settings>General>About+here you can look at what Model etc. your phone is. You can cross reference the model number. Here is a great explanation as well :"One simple way to externally identify the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 models, as well as all other iPhone models, is by the model number printed in small type on the back of the phone.

The model number printed on the back of the GSM-equipped iPhone 4 is A1332, the model number on the back of the CDMA-equipped iPhone 4 is A1349, and the model number on the back of the iPhone 4S is A1387.

If the iPhone will boot, it may be even easier to lookup any of these models by order number with's Ultimate iLookup feature or the EveryMac app. Apple refers to the order number as "Model" in software. To find the "Model" select the "Settings" app and then click General > About > and scroll down until the field is visible.'s Ultimate iLookup and the EveryMac app also can identify these iPhone models by EMC number and the last four characters of their serial numbers."from here. If everything else fails, check with Apple on here. all you ever wanted to know about this, I bet ;-) Hope this helps, good luck.
