Okay, just to clarify, it turns on and works okay when plugged in, but does not work when unplugged?

Hi Edward,

I would first check the battery. See my problem and the solution offered here:

After water damage: Repairing charging circuit?

However and under your circumstances, I would also remove the motherboard, let it soak in isopropyl alcohol (90%) for 15 minutes and then let it dry for a couple of days before I would built it in again. It is possible that there is still some water from the washing machine or moisture somewhere on the motherboard or under metal covers where you cannot see it. the isopropyl alcohol would take care of that.

Consider that your iPod was extremely shaken by the washing machine, and a good amount of water went probably into the iPod via the headphone jack or dock connector.

But to be really on the safe side: I would also disassemble the rest of the iPod as much as possible (just follow the guide here on iFixit) and then let it dry near a air conditioning fan. After that, I would assemble everything.

You might give it a try. It would only cost you $2.50 for the isopropyl alcohol.
