Can I use An External Hard Drive Internally?

I am currently looking to get a bigger HD for my macbook and I currently have a 320gb western digital my passport HD that I am looking to make my internal HD what I am curious about is will the machine itself register the HD?.

If the actual hard drive has a SATA connection it should work fine.
