recognised in itunes but not working

I got an 2nd Gen iPod. It worked yesterday, then all of a sudden it doesn't work anymore. I hooked it up to my laptop and ITunes read and indicate my ipod. When I charge it, it feels hot. Any help ?

In past experiences, if a device generates excessive heat when hooked up to a power source, but won't boot, the battery is the culprit. This is given further weight by the fact that when it's connected to a computer and is receiving power via USB, it connects the itunes. I'd try replacing the battery. It's cheap. I've never done the repair, but it looks like its a jawbone connector as opposed to solder. http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Battery-For-...

Update

I can see the contacts on a second look. It probably needs a battery, and it shouldn't be too difficult if you have any soldering skill.

davidlabbott2, I agree with the battery exchange, but it does need to be soldered. It is not a jawbone connector. You might want to revise your answer.
