Is my fan broken in my MacBook Pro?

MY MBP is making some strange noises. Sometimes a screeching noise when turned on, sometimes a quiet ticking noise that goes on for 10 or so ticks then stops, then starts again (the ticking is very faint).

I suspected a broken fan and installed iStat which when the ticking noise occurred showed zero revs for the fan. Not good obviously!

Took it apart and the fan appeared to be OK; put it back together and all OK for few days, then it started again.

Before I order a replacement fan I was wondering if anyone else had experienced this and if replacing the fan fixed it?

And how hard was it to replace the fan?

You could try installing Temperature Gauge 4.0 from the Apple App store App store link. It can show you the temps of your CPU & HD and the RPM's of the fans. It now also logs so you can look back to see what was happening when the noises started..

Bearings squeal when failing... that could be an intermittent problem as the failing bearing sometimes moves, but other times sticks.. Some hard drives tick when failing. You could have either or both problems.

Care must be taken not to rip the connectors off the logic board. Study the diagram and instructions carefully so that the connector separates in the proper way.

Thanks Machead.

I am fairly sure it isn't the disk, no indications there are disk problems and when I took the back off the noises were definitely coming from around the fan.

I don't think the squealing would be the disk, though you are right the ticking could be.
