How do I repair the defective audio jack inside my iPod touch 2nd Gen

Hi,

I reacently noticed, that the audio jack in my iPod has a defective contact which results in unvoluntary touch sensitive mono/stereo sound in my earphones. :P

For now my plan was to open the iPod up, get to the connector from the inside (using few of those guide-photos) and then try to smolder the connector either with a heat gun or with a very small smolder iron tip.

My Questions would be i guess:

Has anyone maybe done something like this to an iPod / other apple device? If so, what tips do u have or what should i look out for?

Thank you guys very much!

Best regards,

Lukas N.

YoloRepair,

Is it me or did you forget to finish your answer to Lukas N?

When I look inside my IPod model A1288 I think it’s an IPod "2".

A hand me down from my Granddaughter.

There are two brass or copper contacts one down maybe half way down the hole

and the other on the opposite wall near the bottom.

I've tried with limited success at bending these contacts out for a more firm contact with the plug.

Can a consumer buy this jack and install it?

Thanks, Bob

Lukas N, you can get a new audio jack from places like this or from here. Then replace yours by using this guide and the video from here. Use a small soldering iron. Hope this helps, good luck.

Hi Lukas,

There's 2 ways you can fix this.

1) a little bit of copper wire, a razor, soldering iron, lead, and some flux

2) New headphone jack, lead and soldering iron

I always choose #1 as it is the easiest and fastest.

Basically you need to scratch the top left and bottom left contacts and solder a wire to the corresponding lines. I know that the top left is the first pad, and the bottom left is the bottom pad.
