iPod doesn't hold songs like its supposed to.

I have an iPod nano(1st generation) & it's a 1GB. I don't know how many songs it supposed to hold, but it used to hold over 108 songs. Now it doesn't even hold more than 46 songs. At first it was 59 then less & less.Everytime I add songs it says iPod can't hold these songs & it says would I like for it to chose the songs that gets put on there so I chose yes to see how many it would put on there & it put 46 on there & no more.I have had my iPod for 3 years,so is my iPod messing up? I took care of it so I don't know how it messed up.

My first though is that you have a large file that is loading. First download the new version of iTunes that came out yesterday. Open iTunes and go to "views" - "view options" turn on "size". Now plug in your iPod and look at what has been loaded and the size of each. The average song is around 3.5 megs so just 500 megs would be about 148 regular songs. So check to see if your adding things like pod casts or possibly a movie.
