Finding the correct Sata cable for HD to logic board?

I decided to restart my MBP the other day. After turning it back on, the laptop would not load past the white screen. I read that it is possible to have the Sata connector go bad and was hoping that this would fix the problem without having to take it in and lose everything stored on the HD. If someone could also help point me to a good guide for replacing it, that would be great as well. Thanks!

Usually a white screen will indicate a hard drive issue. Seldom do I see a cable issue (it can happen). If you can, pair it up with another Intel Mac and start yours in Target Mode via a firewire cable. First see if the hard drive icon shows up on the second Mac. If so copy the user folder then attempt using Disk Utility to repair the drive. If the drive cannot be repaired you will need to replace it. 10/2013 since I answered this question I've seen 5 times the number of cable failure vs hard drive failure on this model.

My lap top is doing the same thing. I have recovered everything from HD and HD works when in another mac. Have tried another HD in my MBP and it starts up but has issues. At crossroad of it either being motherboard or sata cable. Did replacing the sata cable solve your problem?
