Backlight turnes on for two seconds and then goes out.

When I boot my macbook the backlight goes on for 2 seconds and then goes out. The lcd works and you can use the screen If there is a lamp over it. is you press the backlight down button all the way and the press the back light up once the backlight will go on for two seconds. Whats wrong with the backlight?

If you can still see the screen and an external monitor works fine, then I would replace the inverter and/or the inverter cables. To check this move the screen up and down to see if the LCD comes back on. Here's the guide I wrote on replacing the inverter: MacBook Core 2 Duo LCD & Inverter A1181 (fast method) Replacement

If the CFL's stay on at the lowest (lower) setting it sounds like the brightness control logic on the main logic board has a problem.

Often on the MacBooks the Inverter or the invert cables (opening/closing the lid wears it out) need replacement. In this case I don't think they are the problem here given your symptoms.

The other thing here is the CFL's them selves within the display. If you see flickering of the illumination at normal settings then they need replacing. Again, I don't think that is your problem. As you state you do get full illumination then it goes out.
